Boy with a Cat
Boy with a Cat
Judith Leyster (1600 / 10-1660) - Attributed
The composition of the work is based on a painting by Judith Leyster (1600 / 10- 1660) which is now privately owned. It shows two children with a cat and it was re-engraved in the 17th century by Cornelis Dankerts (1603-1656) as a work by Frans Hals. In recent years two paintings have been auctioned which, like the current one, show only one boy with the cat in his arms; this version has been attributed either to the artist, or to his circle. The style and composition of her works initially refer to those of the Caravaggists of Utrecht, and from 1629-1630 to those of the brothers Frans and Dirck Hals.
